A little over a year ago, Facebook had announced an AI experiment dubbed M. We knew it was a Messenger specific tool and past that, not much was known. Today, Facebook has unveiled Messenger M, which is an AI built into Facebook’s messaging platform. Just like the Google Assistant’s role in Allo, M will help you find and do things in Messenger that can otherwise be ‘time-consuming.’ While Allo’s AI is a fully automated system, Facebook’s M has some degree of human oversight, which sets it apart from the rest of the AI-powered assistants that are now flooding the market.
M works by recognizing the context and intent of the conversation, following which it makes suggestions. M also provides handy shortcuts to various features of Messenger such as sending stickers, transferring or receiving money, sending your location, starting a poll or even hailing a ride. Facebook’s blog says that M can even help with making plans, though we’re not really sure what additional value an AI will add to the process of making plans with loved ones.

According to the Facebook Newsroom post announcing M, “M relies on AI machine learning techniques. It suggests relevant actions to help manage conversations or help get things done. We are bringing the power of M’s AI technology to support and enhance the Messenger experience and make it more useful, personal and seamless.”

The post further goes on to say that M is currently only available to users in the United States, but will roll out globally in the coming weeks. Additionally, the message composing has been redesigned so make it quicker to send videos and photos. Lastly, get used to seeing a “more” tab in Messenger as it will be the only way to access features like games, payments, location sharing and rides.
M is officially being rolled out today to both iOS and Android users in the U.S and will eventually roll out globally.
