The Sony Xiperia XZ is Sony’s top of the line device with an emphasis on imaging. The XZ is equipped with be 23 mp real facing camera, with technology carried forward from it rang of cameras, such as laser assisted phase detect autofocus, 5 axis video stabilization. The HW space such as a Qualcomm 820 chip, 3 GB RAM and water resistance put it on par with most flagships, however, it is priced at a premium.
Sony Xperia XZ Review
1. Display
The Xperia comes with a 5.2 inch IPS LCD display, which has resolution of 1080×1920 pixels. It is one of the brightest displays that we’ve seen in the recent past and also one of the most colorful. That being said, gaming is a great experience on the XZ. The colures and the graphics look very extreme and playing something like modem combat 5 can be very immersive. When Sony says that it knows a thing or two about displays, we think it means it.
Apart from the brightness setting, the only two other signification settings are turning the X-reality engine on or off, and tweaking with the white balance. The contrasts ratio is brilliant though, and we would love it that way.RATTING:6.8/10
2. Design
The Xperia XZ really stands out in terms of design. The rectangular from factor employs a mix of plastic, glass and metal all over the body. There’s an overlay of Corning Gorilla Glass 4 all over the fascia, and along with a nice metal finish on the back, it good looking. The 3.5 mm port has been moved to the top, and only the type-C port is at the bottom. The Xperia XZ weights 161 grams, which is slightly on the heavier side, and with a thickness of 8. m.m, it’s slightly thick too. RATTING: 6.8/10
3. Primary Camera
The Sony Xperia XZ packs a 23MP rear camera, and has throw in all the trademarks that one might have heard of from Sony’s camera lineup- Exmore R sensor, Bins Image Processor, 24mm wide G Lens. The 24mm, f/2.0 lens is quite capable of covering a large farm and also letting in a lot of light. We found out those outdoor photos taken even under the setting sun retained a lot of saturation and color reproduction was good.
Sony also pushed out the Android 7 Nougat update, and that brought along with it a manual photo mode, which we thought was quite handy. In our camera benchmark test, we observed that the Xperia XZ, by virtue of its wide lens, showed a little bit of edge distortion, but managed to capture good center sharpness. RATTING: 7.3/10
4. Secondary Camera
The secondary camera is a packed 13 mg unit, which also has a wide lens. The front camera, while good at capturing color in low light, loses out on details when you’re shooting indoors or in the evening. It is also tends to get very grainy. RATTING: 7.0
5. Software & UI
The Xipra XZ runs on Android 6 marshmallow out of the box, but comes with its own UI overlay as with most Sony Phone. It’s lades with a plethora of proprietary apps such as a music player, a news app, a sticker creator and even the familiar Sony LIV app, but luckily not so much bloat ware as Sony phone used to have before. Since Sony has decided to go in favor of a more Google based experience than its own, the Google now screen is also accessible at just one swipe.
There are a lot of options to customize the fell of the UI, in terms of color. Towards the end of the review process; Sony sprang a surprise upon us with the Android 7 Nougat update. The most significant part of this update was the multi- window interface. The menus and app drawers still follow a lot of cues from stock Android. But that’s not to say that there’s no Sony flavor in them- you get a good iconography and typography from the overlay. RATTING: 6.7/10
6. Battery Life
This phone packs a 2900 mAh battery, very close to the unofficial industry standards, and physically inaccessible, something that we’ve come to live with anyway. Even on the work day test, it usually needed to be charged once after lunch, with usage comprising of WhatsAPP, Facebook, Instagram, emails and few YouTube video.
On the video loop test, the device lasted for just a shade under six hours, with brightness pumped up to maximum and running a full 1080p Blu-Ray rip video. While gaming, 30 minutes of Asphalt drained the battery by 9-10%. During the work day tests, we switched on the Stamina Mode, and the battery life shot up to as much as 6 hours more.
There is an Ultra stamina too, but the phone becomes pretty much useless and frustrating with its performance after that. The most annoying part, however, is the Adaptive Charging. This meant that we were sitting yawning away waiting for the phone to reach 100% with a stopwatch in our hands. RATTING: 5.4/10
7. Performance
This Smartphone is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chip, and is supplemented by a3GB RAM. The OnePlus 3, for instance, has a Qualcomm 820 processor and 6GB of RAM, and is available at a much less expensive price tag of 27,999.That being said, a phone’s pricing is also determined by the nature of build material, camera components, design and many other factor. But that doesn’t deny the fact that carrying these kinds of specs puts a lot of performance pressure on the Xperia XZ.
We edited our set of DNG images, each of about 40MB and 22MP each on Adobe Light room, and there were no lags in terms of applying preset or tweaking the image parameters. RATTING: 7.3/10
